Couple/Marriage Counselling

A relationship/marriage consists of two individuals, each bringing their own personality, desires, needs, experiences, and worldview to the relationship. In order for two people to come together, there is a need for adjustment, negotiation, and discussion.

Sometimes, there may be a lack of, or breakdown of healthy communication between you and your partner, where one or both of you are not able to express your needs, desires, fears, and vulnerability, or listen effectively to the other. You could thus constantly be left with feeling not understood, with longing for your partner’s love and attention. Further, with defense and resistance in sharing feelings, it can lead to increase and worsening of problems, such as emotional struggles, not connecting with your partner, lost intimacy, and sexual difficulties.

At such a time, marriage counselling helps provide support through a trained therapist who is unbiased, who stands to see you and your partner on equal grounds, and who can handle simple as well as complex issues in a supportive and non-judging way. It helps you see different perspectives, and serves as a medium to connect and restore lost intimacy. Couples seek marriage counselling for a range of issues, such as differences around finances, differences in parenting styles, communication breakdown, difficulty in resolving conflicts, differences with other family members such as in laws, sexual difficulties, and difficulty with emotional intimacy.

At IReflect, couple counselling involves individual sessions with each partner – to help you explore your unhealthy patterns that you bring to the relationship, and to help you gain perspective of your partner’s patterns as well. These individual sessions are followed up with joint/couple sessions with the therapist, where the mutual goals, dynamics of the relationship, and healthier ways of communication are discussed and worked through. In this process, you start understanding the source of your conflicts and explore different ways to resolve them.

Marriage counselling can help you restore effective communication, and build closeness, intimacy, and affection into the relationship. It further helps developing effective ways to resolve conflicts. It also involves working on rebuilding mutual trust and respect, which can be pillars of a healthy relationship.
