Child/Adolescent Counselling

Child’s world

A child’s world revolves around home, school and friends. Children experience difficulties when problems come in their family or school life. A family is considered a safe space, but when this safe space is interrupted with parents arguing, moving houses or cities, having new siblings added to the existing family, or the child feeling overlooked, it can create anxiety in the child. With respect to school, a child may feel pressures like test anxiety, difficult homework, or difficulty in coping with the class work. With increased importance being placed on competition and scoring marks, there can be immense mental pressure on a child.

It can especially be difficult for children if they witness divorce or separation, death of a loved one, major illness in the family, family tension, abuse in any form, or mental health problems in the family. Being surrounded with issues like these makes a child lose focus and hampers healthy development. Counselling during these times can be crucial in supporting the child sail through these difficult times.

Adolescent’s world

A major change in children’s lives comes when they turn into adolescents or teens. In this phase, a lot of physical, hormonal, and mental health changes take place. These years can be filled with stress due to many reasons, among which, physical changes that lead to psychological impact on body image, self-confidence and peer relationships can get affected the most. Even though adolescents are no longer small kids, they aren’t counted as adults either, and this feeling can be pretty frustrating for them. With all the societal expectations of gender conformity and accepting the roles and responsibilities of academics, adolescents carry numerous pressures on their little shoulders.

Our approach

Child and adolescent counselling provides opportunity for your child to express his/her feelings without fear in a safe space. The counselor supports in building coping skills for a child’s emotional and mental health. The process of counselling aids in enhancing resilience and helping a child feel more confident about themselves. Children, during therapy sessions, are encouraged to be as creative and as expressive as they want, and at the same time taught the importance of adhering to the mutually agreed boundaries between the child and the therapist.

As part of child/adolescent counselling at IReflect, we also meet the parents for some sessions, because we believe in a holistic approach towards helping children, where the parents and the counsellor collaborate towards providing a safe space for healthy development of your child.
